En Garde

First night on job. Happy hour.

Leathery-faced man drops into stool by service bar. Orders whiskey, neat.

Incoming server ticket: Amaretto Sour. Server note: nutz.

I mix the drink, spearing cherries with red garnish sword. Set on service bar.

Whiskey Man reaches over. Drops something into Sour.

I rush over to hold him at garnish-sword point.

“You put something in that drink!”

Whiskey Man chuckles. “Yeah… what you didn’t.” He stabs finger at ticket. “Allergens get blue swords.”

My cheeks turn into cherries. Fucking nuts.

He calls after. “If you’re feeling stabby again, I also refilled the bar napkins!”
